My second stop on my personal winery tour was at the beautiful Heron Hill meeting with my friend Jacqueline and Bekka. It was a very cold and snowy early evening and i was the only person in the tasting room. Both these ladies took great care of me and gave me VIP treatment as we tasted through a wide variety of wines. My visit was cut short due to the weather conditions and the fact that they needed to close. It was a lot of fun. They have been around for a very long time doing their thing. It is a massive property with a huge tasting room and event space, which can accomodate 1,000 guests for weddings and events overlooking the vineyards. They also have a nice cafe called the "Blue Heron" that is closed for the season and during these COVID times. Visit their page at the links below for all your shopping needs and wine club info-
For over 40 years Heron Hill Winery has grown cold climate vinifera grapes and has made elegant world-class wines on a slate hill overlooking scenic Keuka Lake in the Finger Lakes region of western New York. Enjoy the views from the vaulted Tasting Hall, as you taste through a wide portfolio of wines. They focus on Riesling, Chardonnay, and other vinifera varieties. The Lady of the Lakes bubbly series, Game Bird series and dessert wines add great variety to different preferences. Enjoy a glass of our award-winning wine on the terrace overlooking Keuka Lake.
Heron Hill cultivates its grapes from three different vineyard sites encompassing a total of 43 acres including 16 acres of grapevines onsite, 23.5 acres of vinifera grapevines from the owner’s Ingle Vineyard, and 3 acres from Macri Vineyard located on the west side of Canandaigua Lake. Ingle Vineyard is the biggest vinifera vineyard on the lake. All Ingle vineyard grapes are harvested by hand to select only the best fruit from this single vineyard site. Varieties grown here include Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, and Pinot Noir. The vineyard is located on Seneca Point, west side of Canandaigua Lake, on the home property of the Ingles, who maintain the vines themselves along with their staff. Sustainable methods are utilized.
Heron Hill Winery opened the Tasting Room on Canandaigua Lake in 2010. The tasting room is housed in a renovated 100-year-old barn and features a beautiful open space with high ceilings and original hand-hewn wooden beams. Immense windows overlook the vineyards of Cabernet Franc and Riesling.

Heron Hill Reserve Velvet (new release for the season)
Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes sourced from growers in the Finger Lakes and Long Island. RS 11%, Alc 19%. Fermentation is stopped when the ideal sugar level is reached then fortified with grape brandy to stabilize the wine for long-term aging. Aged over 2 years in French and American oak barrels. A wonderful wine to enjoy around the fire on a cold night. Pairs well with berry fruits and dark chocolate. For a cheese pairing, try blue cheese.
2019 IV Late Harvest Riesling (new release for the season)
This pale yellow wine is stunningly aromatic with honey, beeswax, persimmon and marmalade notes. The sweetness is balanced with fresh and high acidity and medium to full body. RS 14.9%, Alc 14.9%. Cold fermented slowly over the winter months in stainless steel. Post fermentation the wine is racked, filtered, and bottled with minimal handling. Pairs well with cheese and fruit tray.
2018 Classic Semi-Sweet Riesling
Medium-sweet Riesling with floral and fruit aromas. Notes of tree and green fruit, like pear, with a splash of honey along with tropical notes of mango, pineapple, and modified by lime zest. Balanced by a spectrum of stone fruit finish, like peach mid-palate through the finish. RS 4.3%, Alc 11.4%. Spicy and tangy dishes like roasted meat and pineapple. It would also complement mussels or crab. For a cheese board, try with sharp cheddar and creamy Brie along with peach chutney.
2019 Ingle Vineyard Pinot Noir Rosé Reserve
Deep, ruby raspberry colored Rosé made from blocks of Pinot Noir of reserve quality grapes. Dominant aromas and flavors of red fruit, like strawberry and raspberry leads to a palate that has more structure and weight than most FLX roses with more dryness on palate and finish akin to Chards. The medium-high acidity is still there. RS 0.3&, Alc 13.2%. Spicy cuisine such as Asian and Indian. For appetizers, try bruschetta or fried cauliflower. For a cheese pairing try a feta or semi-soft goat cheese spread on crusty bread.
